Sodium Petroleum Sulphonate Sodium Petroleum Sulphonate
what is sps?
SPS: stands for Sodium Petroleum Sulphonate.
Sodium petroleum sulfonates: sps are unique materials due to their dual function as surfactants and Anti-corrosion. The polar nature of the end of the sulfonate molecule acts as a typical anionic surfactant and orients itself with water or other polar materials while the hydrocarbon tail bridges the nonpolar phase.
Sodium sulfonates have had a long history of use in metalworking fluids. It function as emulsifiers and corrosion inhibitors.
In liquid system, sulfonates can hold oil and water apart so that they can co-exist & form an emulsion.
Sodium petroleum sulfonates features and benefits:
Sodium petroleum sulfonates (SPS) can be widely used as the primary emulsifier in the formulation of lubricating compounds.
Sodium petroleum sulfonate is used in the following cases:
- Fluid cutting
- Metalworking lubricants
- Detergency
- rust inhibitive
- automotive rust proofing
Applications of SPS or Sodium Petroleum Sulfonate:
- Metalworking Fluids
- Anti-Corrosion Compounds
- On solid surface, sulfonates functions like adhesive, holding oil to metal. By chemically bonding oil to metal, sulfonates prevent water and air from reaching the surface of the metal.
- Ore Flotation
- Demulsifiers
- Motor Oil and Fuel Additives
- Overbasing
