Triethanolamine Lauryl Sulfate PADAPON TL-40

triethanolamine lauryl sulfate :

In this Article, we’ll take a look at Triethanolamine lauryl sulfate (TLS/TEALS) as an anionic surfactant (click here) with both amine and sulfate functional groups. This composition offers better solubility and less eye irritation than similar lauryl sulfates. TLS is a clear, viscous liquid that divides structurally into an extended alkyl chain, a sulfonate group, and triethanolamine, balancing its hydrophobic and hydrophilic attributes.

Predominantly used in the cleaning sector for its gentle foaming properties, its applications extend to paints, foam ceramics, textiles, and agriculture. Its biodegradability and mild nature make it an environmentally friendly and safer choice compared to counterparts like SLS ( what is sls? )

Introduction and general information

triethanolamine lauryl sulfate introduction:

Triethanolamine lauryl sulfate (TLS/TEALS), also known as TEA lauryl sulfate, is a Transparent, viscous  anionic surfactant . TLS contains amine and sulfate functional groups simultaneously. Neutralizing lauryl sulfonic acid using triethylamine, a tertiary amine, yields higher solubility compared to other neutralizers. TEALS functions effectively as a foaming agent and induces lower eye irritation than alternative lauryl sulfates. Due to its softness and non-irritating eye property, PADAPON TE-230 ( triethanolamine lauryl sulfate )  is also suitable for baby products.

Appearance

Triethanolamine lauryl sulfate (TLS) for short, is a transparent, viscous liquid. It typically displays colorlessness or a pale yellow hue and emits a faint odor.

Chemical structure and mechanism of act

The general formula of the TEALS could be described as C12H26O4S.C6H15NO3.. Its structural composition divides into three segments:

  • Extended Alkyl Chain: The long alkyl chain operates as the molecule’s hydrophobic or lipophilic segment. Adjusting the carbon count to 12-15 optimizes performance at lower temperatures, while 12-16 suits higher temperatures. Micelle attributes and physical characteristics correlate with alkyl chain length.
  • Sulfonate Group: The sulfonate group ensures solubility within hydrophilic media, particularly water. Sulfate ester links may weaken at a pH value below 4.
  • Triethanolamine: Incorporating triethanolamine neutralizes the fatty acid segment, thereby buffering pH. Triethanolamine belongs to both categories of thiols and tertiary amines. Its alcoholic structure enhance the product solubility. And as an amine, presence of nonbonding electron pairs on nitrogen atoms intensifies acidic interaction.

TLS Applications and target markets:

Cleaning and Self-care :

TLS finds its primary use within the cleaning industry, appearing in shampoos, detergents, and cleansers due to its good foaming and emulsifying capabilities. Its Gentle nature suits formulations such as baby shampoos and bath gels, offering mild cleansing without irritation.

Polymer, Paint, Resin, Coatings :

TEALS(what is teals?) adapts as a rheology modifier or thickening agent in water-based coatings and as a dispersive agent in acrylic systems. Its utility extends as wetting agents in diverse polymeric systems.

Construction :

Triethanolamine lauryl sulfate is a key component in preparation of the foam ceramics. Employing the TLS in such systems as hydrophobic agents would lead to the formation of stable foams with high strength.

Textile Industry :

In textiles, TLS functions as a dyeing detergent or an emulsion stabilizer. It also strengthens chemical attributes during finishing treatments.

Agriculture :

TLS’s nonhazardous and biodegradable nature make it suitable to be employed in insecticide and fungicide formulations. It disrupts fungi cell membranes and insect nervous systems as well as facilitating component dispersion.

Safety Considerations :

Triethanolamine lauryl sulfate is considered to be safe for use in self-care and cleaning products. Its eco-friendly qualities, as a biodegradable and nonhazardous substance, align with environmental standards. While minor skin irritation might occur, it remains milder compared to analogous alkyl sulfates like SLS.
